Many years ago, The Gender Equity Advocates Network and the Gender Equity in Hiring Project began a small effort to elevate and amplify women as experts in their domain with a group of amazing folks–something we tentatively called #BindersFullofWomen after Mitt Romney’s deeply offensive comment in 2012.

At the time, this appeared most necessary in the area of Israel studies, where male-identified experts historically were those elevated as experts and recommended—and it’s clear now that we need some help with this everywhere.

We consistently see requests for scholars in residence where men are amplified, and a woman’s name is not mentioned–even in spaces where women are accustomed to amplifying each other’s voices. This collaborative effort is long overdue.

Instead of continually asking, we’re creating a database that we can make available so that folks can access, vetted and recommended by responsible second parties, and sortable by topic and audience. And most importantly, let’s make sure that folks who are seeking know that they need to pay their presenters and scholars, and not simply offer them a plane ticket or a place to sleep, or just the honor of speaking.

Consider submitting a recommendation on behalf of someone else.  Amplify a talented scholar, a powerful voice, a rising star–or just a woman whose voice you believe is unheard and deserves to teach us all.
